LONDON,
Ont.- Pakistan's Farazan Rasheed completed an impressive run at the Nash Cup
squash tournament on Sunday with a victory over top-seed David Phillips of
Beaconsfield, Que., in the championship final.
The competition at the London Squash Racquets
Club was the second event on the Canadian Squash Circuit for the 2008-09
season as well as a stop on the men's pro circuit (PSA).
The unseeded Rashan took the 56-minute match
11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5. Phillips, competing in his first career PSA final, was
the only player in the tournament to win a game off the 19-year-old Rashan.
In the London Free Press, Phillips lauded
Rashan's speed and said he expected a very tough match. The turning point for
the Canadian was squandering a 9-7 lead in the third game. Phillips is now
en-route for the world championships in Manchester, England which start on
Saturday.
The next stop on the Canadian Circuit is the
Goodlife Squash Open October 23-26 in Ottawa.
The Canadian Squash Circuit is a national tour
consisting of Men's PSA and Women's WISPA sanctioned events across Canada.
Canadian players compete for points in the Canadian Squash Circuit standings,
which culminate with a year end Grande Finale between the highest point
earners from the Men's and Women's Circuit. The Canadian Squash Circuit's
goals are to provide Canadian squash players with an opportunity to play at a
high level of competition within Canada and to increase the level of awareness
of squash in Canada.
The 2008/2009 Circuit will also feature stops
in Ottawa ON, Saskatoon SK, Vancouver BC, Richmond BC, Calgary AB, Edmonton AB
and Winnipeg MB.
